    Review

Akira is one of the best movies to have ever reached the North American Cost. With it's strange camera shots and the depth of the characters, your truly emerged in the tekno-apocalyptic world that is Neo-Tokyo. ai-akira-tetsuo.gif - 41.1 K

Katsuhiro Otomo's true genius is shown in his characters. Each one has their own style, gestures, and way of thinking that is unsencered and truthful. The friendships, romances, and self-sacrafice that you also see are relivent and acurate with each characters own distinct nature. Even though the movie is called Akira you don't even find out who or what it is till the end of the movie. I found this to be disapointing since the Akira manga (comic), whitch the movie was based on ,started off with the boy Akira being experimented on by scientists and the eventual development of his powers that bring about world war 3.

Most of the movie ended up being focused on Tetsuo a young man who is still trying to prove himself to the world. Tetsuo finds himself losing control of his mind at the sight of his forming god like powers. I mean if you could fly around and not even the power of a tank's bullet fired strate at your face could hurt you then wouldn't you feel like the rules of mankind just don't apply to you anymore.

The movie, even though it was very well made, still should have stared Akira as the main character. But it still maneged to capture my atencion and is worth watching again and again.

    SYNOPSIS ai-akira-bluekid.gif - 33.8 K

The story is set in Neo-Tokyo in the year 2019, A.D. after the holocaust of World War III. The Olympics are expected to take place in Neo-Tokyo the following year. The motorcycle gang of "healthy, juvenile delinquents" race through the city led by Kaneda.

An unusual looking boy, Takashi, suddenly appears in front of them and Tetsuo, Kaneda's best friend, is hurt by the boy's paranormal powers. As a result, Tetsuo is institutionalized in a military hospital. During his hospitalization, the military Colonel and doctor discover Tetsuo's own hidden power and transfer him into the laboratory to perform power awakening experiments.

Meanwhile, Kaneda is involved in an anarchist riot and inadvertently saves Kay, a female rebel. As a result, he finds out that the resistance target is the secret experimental laboratory where Tetsuo is being held captive.

Due to the excessive psionic awakening experiments, Tetsuo acquires unlimited power and loses all self-control. This nightmare becomes a horrifying reality, as was the appearance of "Akira" Which instigated World War III.

Now, the survival of Earth is dependent on Kaneda, Kay, the Colonel, Takashi, and the battle of wills with Tetsuo.
