The Multi-Purpose Fighting Machine which NERV
has built in order to combat the giant Angels.
These giant robots function through a cerebral-nerve link with their operators.
The pilots connect through the A10 neuron system of the brain. They can
connect through their plug suits and the medium
of liquid known as LCL.
Normally, they draw on external power provided through huge umbilical cables. However, when necessary, they can run on internal power for a limited number of time. Five minutes if they are in standby mode and one minute if they are full-active mode. This shortage in power has been solved when Eva 01 managed to engulf an Angel's S2 Engine, making Unit 01's power supply unlimited whether connect through an external cable or not. Currently, the Evangelion robot is the only machine with enough ability to cancel out an enemy's AT field. They use a wide range of weapons from a Prog-Knife to a Pulsitron Rifle. In the course of the series, Ryouji Kaji explains the importance of the Evangelions. Kaji said that if at any time an Angel comes in contact with Adam, who is beneath NERV headquarters, the disaster known as Third Impact woudl occur. The only ones with the power to stop the Angels are the Evangelions. Dr. Ristuko Akagi also stressed that the "armor" of the Evangelion is actually Bindings which let them control the Evas. Without the bindings, the Evangelions are very difficult to control (if fact, beyond human control). She also stressed, that Evangelions are man made by other men and that they have no human souls within them. Man did something and found God. When they picked-up God, God became angry and punished man (Second Impact). God disappeared. So man, tried to make God with his own hands: Adam. And man created himself in Eva. Evangelion Unit 00 - Prototype is the first Evangelion built. However,
it wasn't originally built for combat use, but was later rebuilt to battle
the Angels. It has only one eye (cyclops-eyed).
In earlier episodes, Unit 00 appeared in the colors of bright orange, but it was heavily damaged by the attack of Ramiel and had to be re-built. It is now a blue and white Evangelion. |

Evangelion Unit 01 - Test Type is the first Evangelion to show combat
against the Angels. What is so different from
Unit 01 is it's design. Although Unit 01 may look the same like the all
Evangelion, details like chestplates reveal that there is something different
about this Evangelion. Unlike Unit 00, this Evangelion has two eyes and
has a color scheme of purple, bright green and orange.
Unit 01 was "awakened" into full power during the attack of the 14th Angel. |

Straight from NERV Section Three in Germany, Unit 02 is the world's first production type Evangelion, built for actual combat. Along with Ryouji Kaji and Adam it was shipped to NERV in Tokyo-3. It first saw action with the only aquatic Angel, Gaghiel. | |

Unit 03 was one of the short-lived Evangelion. Built for combat like
Unit 02. Unit 03 was affected by an Angel Virus while in transport to NERV
headquarters.
It became the Thirteenth Angel, and NERV had no recourse but to destroy Evangelion Unit 03. It's pilot, Touji Suzuhara lost an arm and a leg in the process. |

Unit 04 was never shown in the series. However, Gainax made some production
sketches of a possible Unit 04 to give fans a brief look at the Evangelion
that never was.
Unit 04 was constructed in the second branch of NERV in the Nevada Desert along with Unit 03. However, during a test wherein NERV scientists tried putting an S2 Engine inside the Evangelion, the Evangelion and the entire second branch of NERV was completely destroyed. |
