The basic story of Sailormoon:
One day, a clumsy 14 year-old girl named Tsukino Usagi (Usagi, meaning Bunny, being her first name) woke up late, again.  In order to get to school on time, she had to hurry.  On her frantic run to school, she ran into a few little kids (more like brats) that were torturing a poor little kitty.  After Usagi scared the kids off, she checked the kitty to see if it was ok.  The thing Usagi didn't know was that this kitty was no ordinary little kitty.  The black-furred kitty's name was Luna and she definitely had characteristics that were more human in nature than anything else.  But as Usagi encountered Luna, the school bell rang and she hurried off.  Later that day, Usagi went home and took a nap.  But her rest was disrupted by the reappearance of a certain black-furred kitty we all know and love: Luna!  She encountered Usagi again, this time talking to Usagi!  Usagi, not expecting this, thought she was dreaming!  Silly Usagi!  Anyway, Luna described to Usagi the Moon Kingdom of the Silver Millenium of a thousand years ago and that Usagi was destined to find and protect its lost princess, Princess Serenity.  But Usagi wasn't going to do this as Usagi! No!  She was destined to become the Pretty Sailor-Suited soldier of Love and Justice: Sailormoon!
As Sailormoon, Usagi would have to
A)  Find the other pretty sailor-suited soldiers,
B)  Find the Princess, and
C)  Protect her.
Usagi, not being very courageous at all, denied that she was even awake when Luna told her these things!  But, Luna, being determined as she was, proved to Usagi that was she was saying was true.  She did this by giving her a brooch to wear on her uniform, so she would have it when she needed it.  Then she told her how to use it.
"Moon Prism Power, Make Up!!!!!"
In a magical explosion, Usagi became Sailormoon!  She defeated the enemies that came toward her that day with the help of Tuxedo Kamen!  And after that, as they say,
the rest is history!
