Before we go ahead and demo the characters, we have to recognize there are two distinct story arcs in Excel Saga. We'll call the main one "Excel Saga" and the second one "Pedro the Movie." Most of the characters crosses over both stories but they're fairly distinctly separated. Let's take a look.

The Characters of Excel Saga

ExcelExcel's Eye. Pretty ne? is the main focus of our story. Ultra-genki, somewhat potty-minded, but overall wholesome girl of about 18, Excel has an indestructable adoration for Illpalazzo. She is voiced by the seiyuu talent Kotono Mitsuishi, who can rap at about a few hundred words a minute (and she sure does that here). "Hanako Dosukoi."

With Excel, we have Hayat Hayat's eye. She's a pretty one, the alien princess. Somewhat of a foil to Excel, she's demure and quiet, and is very weak physically, and is pretty much dead over half of the time. She's, by occupation, Excel's sidekick and number 3 in Akurosu. Voiced by Omi Minami, who was also best known as Ruri Hoshino from Nadesico, powers this martian voicebox of mature allurment. Her words are like butterfly knives. Her favorite drink...tomato juice?

Of course, every organization must has its dark overlord, and Illpalazzo I want his shades is pushed over this role. Is Takehito Koyasu acting a good or evil persona? Will his organization, "Aku ro su," (or Across) take over the world? We'll see.

And oh, of course, we can't forget the mascot/running gag Menchi Feel the sadness emitting from the eye. And yes, it's a SHE and she's a DOG. Not a cat or any other animal thereof, non-fictional or otherwise. The Satomi Kourogi voices the delicious looking dane whose appearent purpose is to live to satisify Excel's tummy, but the question is, well, cooked for now.

On the other side of Akurosu's quest to install the world of its ideal, we have the pseudo police force run by Kapafu watch it spin!, who has a mysterious past himself, aside from his weird hair attachments. He is always very resorceful, backed by a lot of taxdollars.

Kapafu has his minions, and the most competitent one of them all would be Matsuya Misaki , who is a sharp-looking woman with a lot going for her. Unfortunately her effectiveness is foiled by her companions. I think she's voiced by

Iwata Norikuni , Sumiyoshi Daimaru and Watanabe Tooru live next door to Excel and Hayat's apartment. These three are friends since a long ago, and are employed under Kapafu to combat Akurosu's activities. Iwata has a thing for the Ropponmatsu while Watanabe has a thing for Hayat (and unknowning of her occupation). Sumiyoshi, well, talks in text. They're voiced by Morikubo Shoutarou as Iwata and Okiayu Ryoutarou as Watanabe.

Ropponmatsu? There are two types of Ropponmatsu, the large version and the small version. They're a series of robot created by the genius scientist Shioudera Houjyo. The large one is of much strength but of much violence. The smaller one are perhaps, more suited to Dr. Shioudera's ideals ^_^; Both are also deployed under Kapafu's forces. and voiced by Satsuki Yukino.

We have the space alien race of Puchu , who are cute teddy bears normally but they turn into some ugly critter upon fatility. The civilization of Puchu is advance in technology, as they've built large space fortresses, battleships, mobile suits, and the like. I think Excel said it the best. "What the hell are you?"

The Characters of "Pedro the Movie"
Pedro , of course, is the focus of our secondary story. The South American (Columbia, exactly) braveheart suffered an unsufferable fate. Will he return to his loving wife and son? With Takashi Nagasako's accented Japanese, we will see if he deserves continuity in his saga, on a per-episode basis.

Our next character can't be simply introduced, because she is like "mother nature," or "Ish-san" as Excel calls it. Ish-san is, well, a whriling vortex of space, with arms and various attachments that appear when convinent. The ability to resurrect, though, is to be noted. And yes, she's voiced by Mizutani Yuko. For those of you who care, her full name is "Daiuchuu no Ooinaru ishi" which means something to the extent of "the great will of the galaxy."

Nabeshin , perhaps one of the most exciting character in the show, can be described as Lupin crossed with Spike Speigel. Voiced by the show's own director, Watanabe Shinichi, you know Nadeshin is guaranteed a butt-whooping role in this show. Learn to fear the fro! Actually, Nabeshin is based on Watanabe Shinichi himself, or for the slow, Wata(nabe Shin)ichi. Not to be confused with another anime director, Watanabe Shinichirou.

In addition, there's Pedro's wife, his son Saltore, and his dark rival, and that guy which will not be revealed until later in the show. All in all this makes an exciting and fun side dish to go with the main course.

And although this above is not a complete list of characters, we cannot leave out Rikudo Koshi himself, the creator of Excel Saga. A manga artist as occupation, he introduces each episode to the anticipating audience, and is also a running gag of sorts. The seiyuu Wataru Takagi fits in his shoes, surprisingly not the artist himself. The thing is, he actually looks pretty dashing in real life, too. ^_^
