WHAT IS ANIME?

Anime is Japanese animation. If you're not familiar with exactly what it is, you may remember having seen some anime on American TV in the last 30 years. Early examples in the 60’s were Speed Racer and AstroBoy. Later came such shows as G-Force/Battle For The Planets, Star Blazers, Captain Harlock and Robotech in the 1970's-1980's. In the last year or two there have been more attempts to bring more anime to TV in America with Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball. There have also been some anime released here on the big screen. Most notable of which was Akira, and more recently Ghost In The Shell was released and played in many theaters across America.

Anime in general is characterized by a much higher art quality than traditional American animation, and much of the time contains more complex plots and storylines. The stories often deal with real life situations of death and love, emotion and emotional growth, presenting them in a mature and believable way not present in your average "saturday morning cartoons". In most western countries, cartoons are considered "kid stuff", but in Japan, the artists, voice actors, and production teams' names can be household words, well known and admired for the quality of their art.

Anime spans the breadth of genres. It is not just big robots on the rampage or little boys becoming gods. It is love stories, stories of swords and dragons, campy hilarious romps and almost anything else a person could want. Anime is all this and more!
