Who
is Asuka? Fire and passion personified, Asuka
leaps into every situation with zeal that is unmatched by anyone else!
She is determination and stubborn anger. Asuka refuses to settle
for ANYTHING but first, last, and ONLY place. However, she is also
a troubled soul in need of mending, no matter how thick and hard her outer
shell of arogance seems to be.
How does she see Shinji? Probably the closest thing to an equal she has ever known...even if she never admits it. From day one, she tries to prove she is the top gun of the Eva Project...but will occationally reconize that Shinji has helped her more than once. She torments him all the time, trying to get a rise out of his normally docile cover, and always seems pleased when she can. Her competitive nature directly opposes the possibility that Shinji will not 'chose her', even if she would never admit she wants him to. Asuka doesn't want Shinji....unless she has ALL of him. She will take no second place in his heart.
How does Shinji see Asuka? At first, Asuka is an annoyance to Shinji. She literally moves into his life, without his concent, and demands his obediance and respect, when her actions have done nothing to deserve it for many...many...episodes afterwards. However, when forced to 'sync-train' with Asuka, Shinji unknowingly starts to do something he has never done before. He tries to understand her. Eventually, Shinji gets close enough to see her at her most vulnerable moments, and realizes that they are not so different after all. Though he can never confront Asuka about his feelings, he does mention that if she wants his heart, all she has to do is be kind to him. A very honest plea from a boy who wants only for people to stop hurting him.
Shinji and Asuka, together? The classic Asuka/Shinji paring is perhaps the most accepted of the possible relationships. Mostly due to everyone still all giddy from Ranma 1/2. <laughs> After all, they fight, so they MUST be in love, right? Shinji sees Asuka as someone he can draw strength from, and even protection during his darkest moments. Asuka sees Shinji as the only person even remotely like herself...sometimes getting worried at how alike they are. At the end of it all, these two could very well be the next Adam and Eve...as depressing, and scary as it sounds. No matter the fate of the world, however, each of them will only accept the other once their own inner dragons have been slain. Perhaps they can help each other in that task as well.
