Banpresto worked on a 32-bit counterpart of their SuperNES favortie
Super Robot Wars. The result was: Neo-Robot Wars for the Playstation.
Unfortunately, people found that elements of this game aren't quite as
good as the original Super Robot Wars series on the 16-bit SuperNES.
Yes, the Playstation may have used it's polygon power to churn up mechas
and produce some great polygon effects, but loading times killed the game
(although because of the name Super Robot Wars, it still sold). Banpresto,
wanted to correct their mistakes on the Playstation version by unleashing
a new game for the Sega Saturn: Super Robot Wars F. Suprisingly,
this game borrows elements from the 16-bit SuperNES version at the same
time, it still was given added features and a more refined level of gameplay.
It's wasn't a surprise that Super Robot Wars F became on the best selling
Sega Saturn games of all time as well one of the best loved.
At a glance, Super Robot Wars F may seem a bit dated in terms of graphics. Quite true, since Banpresto based the game on the 16-bit counterpart (which fans loved). However, the dated graphics are still up to par with and can kick ass out of all those polygon thingamajigs (this is probably one of those times that we find that sprites are better than polygons). The FMVs are taken directly from the anime series of the robot you are playing and although they are not as smooth as say the opening of Dead or Alive (both use the TrueMotion video compression technology), the videos aren't grainy although the sound is a bit on the rough side. Super Robot Wars F also uses a fairly simple sound effects and music, however, they got rid of all those hissing and blurry sound effects and processor driven BGMs, which is quite good, since there is a lot of voice and BGM involved in this game (it's like playing an anime episode from somewhere!) However, like many of the Saturn favorites, Super Robot Wars F shines in game play. This game is as addictive as Dragon Force and although I may not know a lot of Kanji, things are still pretty easy to understand (the only things I have to guess is the Psycho Spell Attacks). Most of the story I have gathered from FAQs in the Net, and this helps me as a guide to Kanji was well. Bottom line is, this game is great and worth getting as a import. However, it's probably better if you really are into things like animes and mechas, or you wouldn't find yourself enjoying it as much as I do. The gameplay is kinda short, though. It look me 36 hours to finish the game, and you would probably take lesser time to finish it. Super Robot Wars F is like Dragon Force, only much fun. I can't wait for Super Robot Wars F Final this 1998. |
