2000 A.D. and the world was contacted by a mysterious alien race claiming that by the holy orders of God they would send an "Angel" to the human race. At that same time an asteroid landed in the depths of Antarctica. Finding out that this was no ordinary asteroid but a living organizism in deep sleep. Until finally the thing erupted blowing up the whole of Antarctica causing a meltdown of the ice. This meltdown caused great destruction throughout the planet. The Angel warned the human race that in fifteen years they would return and see if the people learned anything.

And so in 15 years the human race prepared for the Angel's return not even knowing what they did wrong. During these years an organization was formed. The organization, NERV, was given all the funds for it to create anti-angel weapons. The most powerful of the weapons was the "Human Shaped Final Battle Weapon" codename... EVANGELION. The robots used by the angels were now being used by the humans to protect them. Gendo Ikari, the head of the project, formed a program to find suitable pilots for these EVA Robots, so far they have only found three, all of which are fourteen years of age.
