Updates
Thank you for your support. In
addition to putting up the petition, I will post these updates to let you
know details as to what is going on. Again, thanks for your support.
Each entry is listed by date (most
recent first).
2-20-2002 A little while after updating this last night, I decided to go to the "ask john" section of animenation.com because I figured that a) many people have written him with some very interesting questions which I think he answered very well, and b) many people seem to read the column so I might get some exposure should he post my question. Well, I did get a personal response from him (which you can read here), and I must admit that what he said is nothing I haven't heard before. The question was not posted on the page as of today. The question posted for today, however, seemed to bear some similarity to my question, so you may want to read that as well.
Even though I have not received any visitor
feedback as of today, I have seriously considered closing the petition.
However, I have concluded that even if this petition has no impact, at
least I will have made my honest attempt to change things for the better
for the anime-loving community outside Japan, and I will have proof of
my effort so I can say that "I was there; I did my part! Did you?"
2-19-2002 As you can see, it's been awhile since I've updated. Haven't had any new signatures for some time. As of today, there are 157 signatures from the first guestbook, plus the 50 from the first round of the geocities guestbook, plus 17 in the current guestbook, for a grand total of 224 signatures. It's a little disappointing, honestly. To those that have signed and told friends about this, thank you so much. To the rest of you, what's keeping you? Oh well. I'm considering closing the petition all together. I'm just not sure that there is a need for it anymore, but I'll let all of you that actually visit influence that decision. Contact me to let me know what you're thinking.
To end on a good note, the two year anniversary
of this petition was Jan. 23rd, so happy 2nd birthday to my petition.
The 25th month anniversary will be in four days, so happy 25th as well.
9-17-2001 No new signatures today
(grrrrr). However, I have been spreading the word (have you?).
One place I've brought this up is the forums at dcemulation.com.
It's a cool place to visit if you love the Sega Dreamcast. Anyway,
you can click here
to see how I brought it up and how people have responded. I could
talk about it, but if you go to it, you'll be able to get all the info
there. That is all.
9-15-2001 I just learned today that
the Geocities guestbook will only hold 50 signatures. At the point
when it gets 50, it refuses to take anymore. So, for about fifteen
days now, it has been refusing signatures. So, to clear up space
on the guestbook, I have put all the current signatures on an archive page,
and then I emptied the guestbook. This is a minor setback, but it
is easily remedied. Please sign now if you haven't yet or weren't
able to in the past 15 days. Thanks!
8-25-2001 OK, it's been a (long) while since I've updated. I'm sorry, but I have done worse. Plus, between last update and now, I have made sure to approve all new entries to the guestbook that meet the guidelines, so if you've signed, your entry should be up by now.
There are a couple of things I need everyone to think about as entries are put in. First, entries on the current guestbook are listed in the order in which they come in (the first guestbook listed the entries by newest first). So, if you just posted, your entry will be at the end, not the beginning. Second, this guestbook seems to dislike long messages, so, please keep your messages to a minimum (you can email me if you want to write a little longer). Thridly, even though my petition addressed those living in the US and Canada, I have recently noticed that supporters of this have signed from all over the world! Yei! Just in the recent postings, people from Belgium, Fanelia, and Sweeden have posted, showing that this issue is not just in North America. However, I am not sure which companies handle production and distribution for these markets. Therefore, I will leave the statement page as it is. However, anyone anywhere is welcome to sign (as always). When I can find this info (or if someone can send it along), at that point, I will change the statement to include wherever the problem exists. Lastly, make sure to spread the word! Signatures are still coming in, but more are always needed. I'll do my best, and you do yours. Until next update! C-ya!
One more thing: The total number
of signatures gathered as of now is 205! Sugoi! Keep going!
3-31-2001 Well, the Guestbook.com petition gets cancelled tomorrow, but the Geocities Guestbook has been in place since last update, so any visitors that have come since then have left their thoughts on that (I've approved 2 already). So between the first petition and the new one, there are 159 signatures on for this cause. Cool.
Since I do not know if the signatures will still be up after tomorrow, I have gone and saved the seven html pages that hold the 157 signatures so there is actual records of our achievements. To access these pages, go to the petition page and look at the links right above the sign and view buttons (which have already been re-programmed to use the Geocities Guestbook).
Besides those tidbits, there isn't much
more to say. Oh well. On to spread the word! Do the same, and
I'll see ya next update.
3-26-2001 I got some good news and I got some bad news. The good news is that the petition has reached 157 signatures today! The bad news also regards the petition. Mycomputer.com will cease all free services as of April 1st. Their justification for this is "a recent and sudden downturn in the Internet advertising industry." However, they will continue to offer paid versions for most of their services. But since I'm not about to pay for the service, the current guestbook that is used for the petition will no longer be accessible as of 4-1-2001.
However, a Geocities Guestbook has already been setup and will be used from now on. It is recommended that the picture links be used for signing and viewing, even though I will leave the old links up for a few days. Please note that if you have already left a signature on the guestbook.com petition that you SHOULD NOT re-sign on the current Geocities guestbook. This guestbook is for new signatures ONLY!
With this turn of events, and the speed
(or lack of) at which signatures are coming in, I am considering just emailing
some anime distributors soon instead of waiting until the goal of 500 signatures.
Contact me and let me know your opinion on this. Until later!
2-24-2001 Hi everyone! Ok,
so the constant updates I planned didn't get around to becoming true, however,
I haven't forgotten this site or this cause (like this update didn't clue
you into that). Anyway, the number of signatures is up to 150!
That's right, one hundred fifty names in a year and one month. Not
good, people!
Well, I am going to try and send out some
more emails tonight and hopefully that will raise awareness. But,
before I go, I would like to wish my petition, that would be nothing without
your help, a (late) happy birthday. On 1-23-2001, this petition celebrated
its first birthday, and my, how the time flies! I remember the day
it was born as if it was yesterday, last week. Anyway, on to spread
the word! Do the same, and I'll see ya next update.
P.S. I haven't forgotten the Q and
A project mentioned in the 7-12-2000 entry.
11-27-2000 Hi again everyone!
I finally got around to doing updates, so needless to say, I have been
extremely busy. Anyway, the total number of signatures is 120!
I'm very, very happy with the effort so far, but it could always be better,
as I always seem to say. I did take some time to do some email searching
last week and will try to do some this week. So, with that, and the
Q & A list, I will have some things to keep me busy in addition to
school. Well, hope everyone who wanted to have a happy Thanksgiving
had one and I'll update ya later. Ja ne!
8-04-2000 Wahoo! Even though
it took longer than I would have thought, the number of signatures is finally
100 (101, actually) as of today! Oh, happy day or something corny
like that! Anyway, I'm still working on that Q and A project I mentioned
a few weeks ago, but it's almost done. A big hug and thank you to
all of you who signed to get this cause to this point and all of you who
will get it further. Until later!
7-12-2000 I did some email searching
again and as of today, the number of signatures is now 93. Sugoi!
Tomorrow I plan on doing some email searching again so hopefully the number
of signatures will be at or above 100 by the end of the week! How
cool would that be?
Anyway, I did get one post (that was promptly
deleted) that was so out of focus, made no sense (I'm still puzzled from
it), and had so much nothing to do with the petition that I am appalled.
So, it is now that I plea with you that if you know someone who is going
to post or if you are going to post on the petition that what is posted
is something that actually has to do with the petition and is not your
practice in the art of senselessly blabbering in paragraph form.
Believe me when I say that the time I use on this petition is time I wholeheartedly
spend, and to waste my time by posting comments which I read through only
to delete really pisses me off! So, please, only sign if you support
the petition!
To end on a more positive note, I have
decided to create a page of questions I think people would ask and the
answers I would give. Even though I have gotten only a few direct
commenting emails (which were all supportive), I have decided that this
list will be useful in saving my time in the future and will hopefully
be appreciated. Some of the questions that I will answer are:
1) Can I link to the petition?
If so, what's the best way to do so?
2) When exactly did you get the
idea for this and when did you finally implement it?
3) Why is this the only regularly
updated section of "The Domain of The All-Great La Eternal" as of now?
4) How exactly do you find the email
addresses that you send your message out to?
5) Don't you think your "Stating
of Cause" page might offend more casual anime watchers?
As you can see, I have done some thinking
as to what you, this cause's supporters, might have to ask. Please
come back as the next time you do, this could get even better in addition
to bigger. Thanks!
6-27-2000 It's been a long time,
but I've finally have gotten out of school, had some rest, and gotten back
from my vacation in Las Vegas (tip to those who are going: don't go).
So, I decided to begin the work I have promised. I thought that a
redesign of the petition section was in order, since I didn't like it that
much, and I did it in less than five hours, so not much thought went into
its original design. The changes are ones that are obvious.
For example, this will be the first page you see from now on when you come
here from home. Also, the previous main petition page is now called
the Stating of Cause page. That page has also had some changes to
it, so please read it now whether you've read it before or not. Other
than that, the petition is basically the same as it was. As for the
number of signatures, it is now up to 78. Needless to say, I need
to start spreading the word some more, as well as you do. Anyway,
please enjoy.
4-7-2000 Well, I've been working,
studying, and traveling, and now that I am back, I come back to find only
75 signatures as of today. Only 3 more since over a month ago.
This is not good. I will be doing more email searching when I can,
but I will be busy with school until June, so don't expect much until then.
2-24-2000 This is a little cooler.
The number of signatures is now up to 72. I am very happy it is at
this point in only one month! Of course, I wish it could be more,
but, I am doing the best I can, and I am dependent on you as well.
Spread the word!
2-17-2000 Ok, this is a little better.
The total number of signatures has reached 61 today. Hopefully, it
will grow more soon. I will be doing some more email searching when
I have a chance. Also, I got an email from La Angel today.
La said that there are some new items up for auction on the "la_angel"
user name at eBay. Well, anyway, this is the link to the auction
list if you're interested.
2-14-2000 This is the worst
Valentine's Day I've had yet. I finally had time to do an update
and I find out that there have been no new entries to the petition since
my last update. Ridiculous! Well, I know this isn't the most
well-known thing on the internet, but is it really so hard to let your
friends know about the petition? I would hope not, especially with
such an important cause at stake! This is the first petition concerning
this subject that I know of, and it might end without any affect or hope
of future action if it isn't signed! Please spread the word!
Anyway, I've done some more hunting for email addresses on sites like www.anipike.com,
so those people that I emailed should be getting the message soon.
And, as I've said in earlier updates, if someone gets the message that
doesn't want it, then I apologize, but please let others who you think
might be interested know. Thanks.
2-5-2000 I've had the flu for
the past 3 days now and I still feel sick. I just had my first bit
of solid food in 72 hours and I don't know whether to feel good because
I'm eating again or to feel guilty because of the extra soy sauce on the
fried rice I had! Anyway, I felt good enough to do this update so
I am doing it. As of today, there are 50 entries on the petition.
How cool is that? But, how cool can it get? Let's see, shall
we? Spread the word! Thanks!
2-1-2000 Nothing new.
The total number of signatures has reached 44. Sugoi!
1-29-2000 It's official.
I've finally had to delete a negative entry to the guestbook. I was
so pissed that someone who didn't like the petition would use up guestbook.com's
resources just to leave a negative, discouraging, and poorly-written comment
on the petition. But it doesn't matter anymore because, like I said,
I deleted it, so no one other than me will have to have seen it.
I was going to put it up with the person's name (but no email because they
didn't post one) and then point out how they can't spell and use punctuation
marks correctly as well as how bad their grammar is, but I didn't think
it was worth my time. However, if someone does post a bad comment
and I am less than happy that day, I will post their name and their email
along with the comment on another page and make fun of how stupid they
are so everyone can see, which is especially good if you're learning English,
because it will point out what NOT to do!
On a more positive note, the petition
has reached 39 entries today. Let's keep it going, ok? Thanks!
P.S. The name left by the annoying
person mentioned above was Crono.
1-27-2000 Like, oh mah gawd!
I am so sorry to have put that there, but what happened when I went to
see if there were any new entries to be approved was nothing less than
phenomenal. The number of entries has almost doubled since yesterday!
The number of total entries is now 27 and I am ecstatic. I am so
pleased and happy that we have made this progress so fast. Yoga ta
honto ni! And, while I'm thinking about it, I haven't once had to
delete an entry due to unrelated or inappropriate material. I am
also thankful for this and I hope this continues that way. Thanks!
1-26-2000 Nine more entries
approved today! Sugoi! Now the grand total is 15! And
to be truthful, it may go up between now (6:49 pm US CST) and the next
time I do updates, which may end up being every day depending on how many
entries I get. I am so happy! Arigato, minna!
One side note: I haven't bothered
registering the petition site with any search engines not only because
it is so time-consuming, but also because I didn't think the benefits would
be great enough. If anyone out there would like to do this, then
please do, and then Contact me so I can give you credit, but if you don't
have the time, don't bother as I won't, at the moment.
1-25-2000 I just approved five
entries for viewing today, including one from the creator of this site,
La Angel! If you want proof that people support this cause, or if
you want to see what you wrote, then please go back now and select view
to see the entries.
Concerning the people that wrote comments
with their entries, this is greatly appreciated, however, you need to be
warned that you are only allowed so many characters. I myself didn't
realize it until someone's message got cut off because it was too long,
which angers me, because it is important that we say what's on our minds
without limits. I tried, but I could not find the number of characters
allowed. All I can say is if you wish to leave a comment, make it
to the point and brief. If you want to make any detailed comments
that would've been too long for the petition, you are welcome to Contact
me and tell me your thoughts, or if I get enough requests, I'll open
up either a discussion board or a chat room where we can speak our minds.
So, now, the total number of entries is
six. It could be better, but I am proud and glad that it got this
many within two days. Hopefully, when I register it with search engines
today, that will bring in more signatures. Also, I will be doing
more website searching to get more emails so I can let more people know.
If you have time, it would really help if you could tell your friends about
this. I need all the exposure I can get for this to work. Thanks
for your help so far, and thanks for your time.
1-23-2000 The first day of
the petition! Yay! Of course, by this point, the only knowledge
of it by people other than myself is to those I emailed by going on anime
search engines and finding email addresses on the webpages I found.
So, if anyone received an email and didn't want to, this is where I apologize.
Gomen! However, if you appreciated the email, then, arigato!
On a side note, I also got an email today
from a person known as Inferno (I haven't gotten the OK to display his/her
email address yet). And what he/she told me was, from what he/she
heard through contacts at the college anime club he/she works with, subtitled
features cost more because a fee has to be paid to the original voice talents
in Japan, and to dub it in the US costs less. I'm sorry, but, even
with the fee for the original voice talents, for the dubbed works, you
have to pay the English voice actors/actresses as well as get money for
the recording facilities (whether the companies own or rent), which, at
that point, should make the price for both dubbed and subbed works equal.
Due to the fact that some companies actually
do charge the same price for dubbed works as they do for subbed, and the
fact that Inferno could not confirm what he/she heard in the original message
or the ones that followed, I would have to say that I believe, at the moment,
that what Inferno said was incorrect, or at least changed somewhat by the
time he/she heard it.
Home is this way.
