Almost all Maya inscriptions read from left to right, and top to bottom, within double columns of text. A few texts are reversed, usually because of the way that they are incorporated into buildings (e.g., on both sides of a doorway, so that one text is "mirror-image"). In such exceptional cases, however, the direction of reading is always clear: perhaps the best clue is that one always reads into the faces of head variant signs.
