Vanda Orchids

Vanda orchids and their relatives consist of a group commonly known as Vandaceous orchids or the Vanda alliance. Vanda and ascocenda are the most frequently grown orchids in this group. These hybrids, grown commercially in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, are extremely beautiful. I have never grown any vanda hybrids, but I have always wanted to. They are more difficult to obtain in the SF Bay Area, and therefore mail-order sources is the best approach in obtaining them.

The Vanda alliance orchids need extraordinary amounts of sunlight to induce bloom, and because orchids of the Vanda genus are extremely tall-growing, Ascocendas are your best bet due to its compactness. Warm temperatures are required for all Vanda alliance orchids, with 70-80s daytime, and 60-70s night-time temperatures.

Did you know: one variety of the Vanda orchid is the country flower of Singapore.
