Spazz's Random Thoughts: Entry 05

My thoughts on random Gundam Wing stuff

March 24, 2001

Well, it's been five months since my last random thought...I guess it's about time I wrote another one, neee? A bunch of Gundam Wing related stuff has been happening lately, so here's what I think about some of the recent events.

First off, I'd like to mention an interesting coincidence. As we all know, Gundam Wing began airing again on March 12th at 4:30 PM after being off the air for a few months. Now, to many it just seems like a random day to start airing again, but I was surprised by it because it just happened to be the same day as the one year anniversary of my Gundam Wing page! Weird ^_^ I took it as a sign to start working on the page again (which is why I'm writing this RT ^_^;;). Anyway, as for what I thought of Gundam Wing not airing for a few months, I actually thought it was a good idea. If you have a short series like Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star, or Ronin Warriors and you keep running through it over and over, people will soon get bored with all the reruns. However, if you take it away for awhile, people might build up the desire to see it again, and will eagerly tune in when it does come back on the air.

Next fun thing is the recent DVD release of Endless Waltz. I picked up my copy at Suncoast a couple weeks ago (along with forcing my boyfriend to buy Volume 6 of Trigun so I could drool over Vash ^_-). It's a really good buy: you get both the OAV and movie versions on the disc, plus extras. I was eager to watch the movie subtitled because, up until I got the DVD, I had only seen it unsubbed and could barely understand the extra movie scenes. If you haven't seen the movie yet, here are some of the extra scenes: Quatre telling Heero and Duo he's going after the Gundams, Sally rescuing hostages on X-18999, Dorothy inspiring (and insulting o_O) a group of citizens, Heero waking up in his Gundam at the bottom of the ocean, and some extra battle scenes. I really enjoyed understanding these extra scenes ^_^ Anyway, more DVD stuff...While watching the subtitled version, I noticed a couple errors in the subtitling that might be confusing. One of them occured when Heero was looking up information on Mariemaia. At one point he said "Deceased two years after her birth." This was, of course, talking about her mother, but the subtitles failed to mention that, so it sounds like Mariemaia is dead o_O;; "Those damn Khushrenada's, they just won't stay dead!" *Ahem* Anyway, another error was later in the movie...I don't remember when it was exactly, but I know Quatre was saying something and the second part of his sentence didn't get subtitled at all. I think it was an important part, but I'm not sure ^_^;; I haven't seen the dubbed version yet, but I assume it's probably pretty much the same as the TV version of Endless Waltz, except, of course, it's uncut. I doubt they went back and redubbed the whole movie for a few extra scenes. However, there was some re-recording of the Japanese dialogue. I noticed this when I first saw this movie about two years ago, and to this day I'm not sure why they re-recorded some scenes but not others. I understand why they did it if the scenes had different dialogue, but there are some scenes where the characters say the exact same thing they did in the OAV, yet the scene is re-recorded anyway. Maybe there were some scenes they wanted people to get a different feeling from than the OAV series gave them. This is also done with the music in the movie, which is my next point. The movie uses the same music used in the OAV series, but often for different scenes. Many people often comment on how different music makes a show feel completely different, but the EW movie proves that using the same music in different scenes can also have an affect on the feeling of the show. The movie also uses a lot more silence than the OAV series...I can't really say which I like better, they're just different feeling, that's all ^_^

Well, I have to go now. It's Spring Break and I have important things to do. Jaaaa na! *goes off to listen to her "DaBest of Da Pump" CD and read her Trigun manga....errr, I mean, do "important things" ^_^;;*
