Spazz's Random Thoughts: Entry 02

Introduction

March 26, 2000

Hello, it's me again ^_^ Last night (Well, technically, early this morning ^_^), I finally put up my first few episode comparisons. So now I've decided to do an introduction explaining what each section of the episode reviews means. Let's get started!

First thing is the episode titles. On the episodes page, you will see a list of all of the episodes, TV and OAV. The title listed in English is simply the title that is being used for the uncut English dub (There are a couple titles which have been changed between the cut and uncut versions). For the most part, they are direct translations of the original titles, which are written in parenthesis romanized next to the English episode title. Why did I do this? I don't know, because I can? Anyway, I decided to list them this way so people could quickly and easily find the episode they're looking for.

Next is "Dialogue changes", which discusses the dialogue changes between the cut and uncut versions of the dub, or, as I like to call it, the "wussification" of the dialogue. I will list what was said in the uncut version, who said it (and sometimes, why they said it or who they said it to) and what it was changed ("wussified") to in the cut version. After that, I may make comments about why it may have been changed or why it doesn't make sense that it was changed. Sometimes, my comments on these can get very long ^_^;; I'm sorry, but I just need to get my thoughts out ^_^

Now, on to the "Edits". This section is about any footage which was shown altered, i.e. blood painted over. I really am surprised at what has been edited...I can't believe that they're actually taking all the blood out. But that's bacically what this section is about.

Next up is "Cuts". This section is about any footage which was completely removed. This is sometimes because some scenes are too much trouble to edit, too violent, or, in at least one case, because the dialogue is too controversial and there's just no way to change it and have it still make sense (In episode 14, some of Treize's speech and a scene with him later were deleted in the cut version because of the "controversial" way he used the word "God"). Argh, the dub is making it difficult for me to catch all of the cuts because of their inconsistencies of what they deem appropriate, but I'm trying my hardest, so this section has all the cuts I've been able to spot. For both this section and the "Edits" section, I will sometimes have scans which show what was cut/edited.

Now, the "Voices" section. This section is about any voices I've been able to recognize, or just general comments about voices I heard. I sometimes even will talk about voices which were, in my opinion, better than the original Japanese voice *gasp*. Soon, I plan to put up some comparison sound clips for those who haven't heard the original voices.

Finally, the "In General" section contains any comments I have the don't fit in the above categories. Sometimes I have "How'd they get away with that?", in which I look at things I thought would be edited or things which usually would be edited, but for some reason weren't in certain cases. I may also talk about my views on the way certain scenes or situations are handled on the show.

One more thing I have to say about my reviews is that I won't mention the same change more than once. What I mean is if something I've already mentioned is shown again in a "last episode" segment or flashback, I won't mention it again because it has already been addressed (And it will give me very little work to do on episodes 27 and 28, since they're both just review episodes ^_^).

Well, that's all I have to say for now. I hope this is at least a little helpful in helping you understand what each section is about. Enjoy the reviews! Jaaaa na!
