Gravitranslation

Botched in Translation

I got into the Gravitation anime in late 2004, and, as I often do when I fall for a series, I decided to pick up the manga, too. Within a few months I had all of the volumes in Japanese, and upon learning that the local library was growing quite a selection of manga, I decided to give it a try in English. After all, even though I'm a Japanese major, there are still plenty of words I don't know, so I figured it would be much easier to enjoy. However, as I started to read them, I sometimes found myself thinking that things seemed a little....off. Things were being said that I didn't remember at all from the original. At first I thought maybe I just hadn't read the original carefully enough and had missed some things, but then I started pulling out the Japanese versions to compare and found that sometimes the English version was indeed completely different from the original version. American pop culture references were abundant, sometimes things were translated in difficult to understand ways, and other times they were just flat out mistranslated.

And so I decided to make this page. It just didn't seem right to me that there are tons of people out there reading the English version thinking it's correct when, in fact, there are mistakes. I've had experience doing version comparisons before when I made a site comparing the Cut vs. Uncut Gundam Wing, so I feel I'm up to the challenge. Ladies, gentlemen, and everyone in between, I present to you: Botched in Translation!
