Startropics

I still remember this game from a long time ago, when I wasn't really an RPGer. It was my second RPG, excluding Zelda games. I still remember playing it for hours. However, in a day where Square games rule the RPG market, and RPGs have taken a big step, this doesn't compare that well. Startropics falls just short of being a classic, although its Zelda type style. But if you're feeling in the mood to just calm down and stick some bananas in your ears, then maybe you should give this game a chance.

You are Mike, and are going to C-Island to visit your Uncle, but when you get there, you find out he has been kidnapped! With your starting weapon as a yo-yo, you must travel through dungeons, graveyards, into a city where only women are allowed in (does FF7's Cloud in Midgar ring a bell?), underwater, and more. Even when you find your uncle, though, you find out that you must go upon an alien spaceship, and collect three magic cubes. Mike! Your journey is only beginning. (But first, get those bananas out of your ears!)

+ The plot is OK and somewhat original. Mike sticks bananas in his ears!

- Play control can be awkward. Easy to get stuck in some situations. Traveling back-and-forth (especially in Chapter 5) can get annoying.

What do I say? Although this game is good, it probably shouldn't be near the top of your "to buy" list. Buy it at a low price. (If you can, make sure you get the letter that comes with it from you Uncle! If not, then just remember that the password in Chapter 4 is 747.)
