The Aftermath

Ayla's Story

Note: In this story I am assuming Ayla and Kino are similar ages. In the game I cannot recall any implications that would mention otherwise.

The Gate was twisting, swirling, with several colors surrounding, taking Ayla and Kino back to 65,000,000 B.C., the beginning of the Cenozoic Era. Now that the Reptites were mostly destroyed, Ayla knew that she would live a normal life. This Lavos destroyer would never give up her winning instinct, for she would still hunt in the forest and protect Ioka against any remaining beasts. The only real order of business was to rebuild Laruba.

And so when Ayla and Kino fell out of the Gate in the Mystic Mountains, they flew Dactyl back to his nest to rest, and set up a meeting.

That night Ayla discussed with her fellow villagers about Laruba. She sent out her strongest men (and women too, of course) to help her rebuild the village. During the course of a month, Laruba was rebuilt. She lived happily ever after, for two years...

Two years later... (64,999,998 B.C.)

It was not too long ago that Ayla gave birth to Kino's child. She decided to name the girl Karla, a mixture of the names Ayla, Kino, and Marle (since, after all, Marle is a descendant of hers). Kino and Ayla shown Karla how to fight, so she would grow up to be a strong chief. Sometimes Ayla would argue with Kino, knowing that her battle tactics are better, and would even teach him better ones.

They lived in the Chief's hut, until one day when Codra, an old messenger that Ayla would trust with her life, ran into the hut, panting.

"What wrong, Codra?" Ayla asked.

"L-aru-ba!" Codra replied, still breathing heavily from exhaustion.

"Laruba burning again?"

"No, Laruba, defend, village... "

"Reptites come to Laruba? Me fight!"

"NO! Laruba... attacking... US!

"What?!" Ayla yelled as Kino's jaw dropped.

Ayla ran out of the hut. She could barely see an army of Laruban villagers marching toward Ioka just beyond the horizon. The pounding of their battle drums could also be heard barely.

It is true that the Larubans were once weak, but that all changed when she returned two years ago. Her village not only rebuilt Laruba, but taught them how to defend themselves in case they ever again needed help. Even some families moved from Ioka to Laruba. The once weak village had gained much power over the two years, but, Ayla wondered, why would they abuse that power and the peace between the two villages now?

Kino ran out of the hut and stared at the oncoming villagers along with Ayla. "We go attack!"

"No!" Ayla yelled, "Ioka get attacked, then Karla might get hurt. Kino stay; Ayla see what go on."

Kino tried to hold Ayla back, but Ayla ran off to the Iokan huts to assemble an army. The Laruban forces would definitely get to Ioka by nightfall. The trader of Ayla's village supplied the Iokan army with weapons and armor.

At dusk, the sound of the battle drums of the Larubans was apparent to everyone in Ioka. The villagers not in the army remained in their huts, since running away, at this time, would be useless.

Ayla's army lined up at the northwestern border, like a wall protecting a town. The drums, along with the Laruban army, stopped a good distance from the line of Iokans. The Laruban army was already in a line, side by side.

Ayla yelled, "Why you attack? We help you, and you attack?"

The Laruban army leader, who was also the Elder of Laruba, stood in the middle of the line they formed, pretending not to hear her. Both armies stood silent for a few minutes, staring at each other. Then the Elder shouted, "UNNGAH!"

Shouting violently, the Laruban army charged toward the Iokan army. Ayla's army met them about half the distance as the battle began.

Before Ayla herself ran into battle she said, as if to a god, "Sorry Laruba, this only way." With a loud, "Cat Attack!" she rolled through the air and into the battle, clawing down a Laruban. She then punched unconscious the two Larubans beside her.

Every once in awhile, Kino, holding baby Karla, looked outside of the hut at the battle. The Elder of Laruba had seemingly retreated from the battle. He could not see Ayla either; she must be in the center of the battle, he thought. Unless she was dead... No! Ayla can't lose!

The battle dragged on for hours. Kino could see the dead and injured bodies of both armies. The Larubans seemed to be fighting as if they were driven by some force. Kino eagerly wanted to be in the battle to help Ayla, but this burden whom he loved, Karla, metaphorically held him back.

And then she appeared...

Ayla was battling a man wielding a Flint Edge in the brawl. Weapons were given to Laruba two years ago by the trader. The man went to thrust at her, but she dodged it. The prehistoric woman swung her fist at the Laruban's head, hitting him, but he quickly recovered. A grin came across his face as she hit him again, but this time onto the ground.

"Ayla, behind you!" a male voice shouted.

She turned around to find a man with a dagger running toward her. He was about to stab her, but an arrow stuck him in the side, killing him. She stared at the arrow and then looked at the direction it came from to see Kino with a Sage Bow equipped. The Flint Edge man recovered to his feet, let out a bellow, and swung his sword at Ayla. In reflex, Ayla swung her body around, blocking the sword with her Bronze Fist and, while still turning, high-kicked the guy in the head, knocking him unconscious.

Ayla ran up to Kino who started joining the fight. "Kino! I told you watch Karla!"

He replied, "No need now! Dark, mysterious woman come. Put blue magic shield around Karla. Tell me fight. Somehow, me trust."

Ayla believed Kino somehow; she felt a presence. Ignoring the feeling, she continued fighting.

As her fight continued, the many remaining forces of Laruba started chanting, "Unngah! Unngah!" as though in a ritual. Suddenly overhead appeared three Dactyls with a Laruban riding each, from which Larubans threw flaming torches onto the Iokan huts, including Ayla's hut, burning them all to the ground.

"KARLA!!" Ayla shouted as she watched the flames burn the hut into ashes. Karla then crawled out from the flames. She was unharmed, and as Kino said, had a blue, magic barrier protecting her. In the distance Ayla could see a woman looking at her, but the night sky prohibited her from seeing the woman's face. The woman then vanished as if by a magic spell. By now the flames spread onto all the huts, consuming the village and it citizens -- all except Karla.

Anger filled Ayla's heart. She ran up to the nearest Laruban, grabbed him, and yelled, "Rock Throw!" She threw the man into the air at a Dactyl. As the man collided with the Dactyl, the beast got flustered, and the thrown man along with the man riding the Dactyl fell to the ground. Ayla threw two other Larubans at the other two Dactyls, creating similar effects.

Ayla had forgotten how much Laruba had grown. Every so often a new wave of Larubans would enter the brawl. She was able to leave the fight for a moment and view it from a tactical standpoint. She thought to herself, it is time...

She yelled, "Retreat!"

Her army stopped fighting and pulled out of the battle, heading south. Kino stopped to look at her thinking, Ayla, retreat? An Iokan pulled him away from Ayla.

Ayla approached the Larubans, kneeled, and said, "We give up. You win."

The Laruban army celebrated. They looked at each other and cheered, ignoring Ayla.

Kino got loose from the grasp of the person who held him and ran toward Ayla, who was now standing. He said, "Where Ayla?! Ayla strong! Ayla fight 'til die! Ayla no lose! You not Ayla!"

"Kino, go," she said.

"But-"

A mischievous grin came across her face as she said, "GO."

Kino recognized this grin. He must let Ayla do things her own way.

Ayla turned her still grinning face toward the celebrating Larubans. Then she called out, "Tail Spin!"

Ayla started levitating in the air; the Larubans stopped celebrating to see this. She then started spinning like a tornado, until one formed around her. The tornado increased in strength until the wind blew the Larubans back to their own village. Ayla slowly stopped spinning and fell softly to the ground.

Blazing from the sky, Epoch appeared. It landed right in front of Ayla.

"You probably need a lift, don't you?" Lucca said.

"Yes, to Laruba," Ayla said. She turned to the Iokans and said, "Kino, you come."

So Marle and Lucca gave up their seats and let Ayla and Kino sit there. On the way, Ayla gave Crono a quick rundown of the situation, and he just nodded. She also apologized to Kino about the retreat signal. The rest of the army knew about the plan she had. Kino, not being an original member of the army, didn't know about it. The trip to Laruba didn't take but a few minutes.

Crono dived Epoch close to the village, and let Ayla and Kino out without stopping the time machine. Before he had a chance to run into the trees, he managed to pull up the Epoch, performing a U-turn (or more like a C-turn) back to Ioka.

Ayla and Kino landed outside of a giant hut, obviously belonging the the Elder. Laruba was not only repaired two years ago, but it had grown into a village far larger than Ioka.

Inside the hut were members of the Laruban Army that were blasted back from the Tail Spin, except for the ones who were unfortunate enough to have slammed against a tree. There was a rug leading up to the Elder, sitting on a throne. This was the coward that ran away from the battle.

As the two entered the hut, a swarm of Larubans formed a semicircle around them. The ones who did not have swords held spears.

"Ha!" the Elder yelled, "You will go down, and we Larubans will rule the world!"

Ayla and Kino looked at each other and knew what to do. In unison they yelled the name of the dual tech that they had learned, "Falcon Hit... 2!"

Kino jumped onto Ayla's hands, and she threw him straight up in the air. Before the Larubans could react, Kino came flying from the right side of the hut, hitting them with his fists flying. His fists may be duller than a blade, but they were stronger than any sword (besides the Masamune) could be. After Kino knocked everyone down, he kept flying to the left side of the hut, where he landed, and ran back to Ayla to face the Elder.

Ayla yelled, "Elder, you can no win world! Give up!"

As if not hearing the statement he yelled, "It's not the plan you think!"

"Huh?"

The Elder made some arm movements and with them he yelled, "Super, ultra, presto, chango, TRANSFORM-O!!!!!!"

Two bolts of lightning surrounded the Elder as he started to morph and change colors. When the bolts disappeared and the colors stopped changing, Ayla and Kino saw his true form... as Ancient Yakra.

Ayla and Kino charged toward Ancient Yakra, who was still sitting on his throne. They both punched him hard, enough to make a normal human beg for mercy, but Ancient Yakra was hardly human, and gave out a sinister laugh. The beast emitted an electrical charge, knocking Ayla and Kino to opposite sides of the hut.

"Hahahaha! Heard it from the descendants! Your weaknesses are..."

Ancient Yakra reached behind his throne, picking up a baby whom he put on his (er, well, on Yakra, I guess it's his) lap. From the side of his throne he picked up a dagger.

"Move," Ancient Yakra started, "and your precious baby dies."

Ayla recognized the baby as Karla, her innocent child. Freezing still, she glanced over at Kino who was also obeying Ancient Yakra. Flames of fury engulfed Ayla's heart; what a coward, she thought, to take hostage a baby, her child. If it had been mostly anyone else, she may have called his bluff, but not with baby Karla. The thought never crossed her mind how Karla got here, only that she was in trouble.

"Good, hahahaha!"

Then, the old man Codra sprinted, amazingly for his age, into the hut. He had probably gotten to Laruba via a fallen Dactyl, or possibly Epoch. Staring into the eyes of Ancient Yakra he said, "You die NOW."

"NO!" Ayla shouted, "He hold Karla!"

"He hold Karla?" Codra asked, "Where?"

Ancient Yakra gave out a snarl. Kino yelled, "THERE! In arms!"

Codra looked at Ancient Yakra's arms, "Me no see Karla. Karla back at Ioka village, with blue shield."

Ayla and Kino turned their heads slowly toward Ancient Yakra. Ayla trusts Codra almost as much as Kino, if not more. The flames of fury that engulfed her heart now turned to an enormous rage that she would never again experience in her lifetime.

Ancient Yakra growled, which eventually turned into a shout. He lifted the dagger, spun it 360 degrees, and stabbed it toward Karla. As it hit her, she disappeared.

"You FOOLS!!"

Ayla finally realized what had happened. She said, "You mess with Ayla head! You make Ayla and Kino see Karla, who not even there!" There was a brief pause before she continued, "And you mess with Laruban head! You make them do what you want! You want destroy all human, take over world!"

"Ahaha," Ancient Yakra laughed, "maybe you do know my plan. You see, in the future two of my descendants will be humiliated grandly. If I destroy all humans, then no one will ever exist to humiliate them, and Yakras will rule! Ahahahaha!"

Ayla felt her rage reach an unbearable extent. This man, this thing, had put the Larubans against the Iokans, killing many, and burning down Ioka. He, it, used her emotional bond with Karla for his own ways. It... was pure evil.

She raised up her arms. Growling, she yelled, "DINO TAIL!!!!!" Another roar was let out, this time from a dinosaur. A dino tail ripped open the hut, and, by the power of Ayla's rage, knocked Ancient Yakra around. When the dinosaur was done, it's giant tail rose out of the hut.

"NOOOOOO!!!" Ancient Yakra cried as with two flashes of light, melted away.

Ayla and Kino were now home, sleeping under the stars. Codra had brought two other Dactyls with him when he went to Laruba, so Ayla and Kino could get home.

The enchantment placed on the Larubans that were still alive was now gone. Ayla and Kino had promised they would help retrieve the dead, and the Larubans promised to help rebuild Ioka.

The blue shield around Karla disappeared with Ancient Yakra's destruction. Karla was sleeping in Ayla's arms, until Karla awoke and started crying. Ayla was a heavy sleeper, but Kino was not, so he awoke.

He got up and lifted Karla from Ayla, who was snoring like usual. He cradled Karla until she soon fell back asleep. He then laid her back in her mother's arms, smiling at the fact that these two ladies were in his life.

Kino looked around. One of dead people, it was difficult to tell the gender, was but fifteen meters from him. He wished that he could have helped those mislead souls, but he knew it was impossible to bring someone back from the eternal rest. As soon as he thought this, he felt a presence.

And then she appeared...

When Ayla awoke she noticed something was different. She looked around and found no corpses, thinking to herself that the nearby Iokans must have retrieved the bodies.

Kino ran over to the now standing Ayla, who was holding Karla.

"Finally, you wake," he said.

"Kino, you help get dead?"

"No, me tell you what happen. Woman come at night."

"Woman?"

"Yes, dark, mysterious woman that put blue shield on Karla. She say all dead from battle, innocent, now live. She wave arm and people from battle, all but Ancient Yakra, wounds heal and stand up."

He continued, "Messenger from Laruba come. Say that real Elder found, tied up. They come, will help rebuild Ioka today."

After Kino said that, Ayla nodded, standing silent for awhile. Dactyls were already approaching Ioka, to help raise it from the ashes. People were walking on the horizon to Ioka to do so also. Ayla just stood there, staring out at the Larubans that once came in war, but now in peace.

Karla calmly awoke. Ayla looked at Karla and remembered the vague image of the woman who was closeby to Karla when the Dactyls came to burn down Ioka. She must be the mysterious woman Kino was talking about. Ayla wished that she could thank the unknown woman. But still, at this moment, a question entered her mind. Who was the woman, and why did she care so much about them... ?
