Chrono Trigger is a great game that I didn't make the mistake of just renting. The plot is about as great as FF3's.
The story begins when Crono, our hero, wakes up in the present (1000 A.D.). He goes to the Millenial Fair that comes along as often as the name implies.
At the fair he meets Marle, a.k.a. Nadia, Princess Gaurdia (he doesn't know that) and she joins him. Up ahead is Lucca with her new Super-Dimension Warp.
When Marle tries it her pendant effects it, and she gets sent back to 600 A.D. (the Middle Ages). Crono goes to find her.
After you save her from the fake chancelor, and return to the present, Crono will be put on trial. Lucca will bust him out and they all are forced to warp to 2300 A.D.
In the future they meet Robo, and they also find out about Lavos, the infamous imortal that destroyed the earth in 1999 A.D. With Robo and oncoming others, they decide to fight Lavos.
Characters:
- Crono - The swordfighting mute with a wild hairdoo (see picture) from 1000 A.D. He will always have to be in the group until he dies (you can bring him back). An awesome fighter and great techs. He has the ability to learn Lighting magic later.
- Marle - Princess Gaurdia, a.k.a. Nadia from 1000 A.D. She and her dad don't see eye to eye on life. Her mother died when she was little. Her fighting ability is not very good but her techs help. She fights with the crossbow and her magic ability is Water, (it's called Water, but she uses Ice).
- Lucca - The genius that also comes from 1000 A.D. Her father is also a genius named Taban. Her mother broke both her legs in 990 A.D. She doesn't fight well, until you get the Wondershot; her techs are not bad. Uses guns and can learn Fire magic.
- Frog - a.k.a. Glenn from circa 600 A.D. He was changed into a frog by Magus when he and a dead friend, Cyrus fought him. Fights great when equiped with the Hero's Medal and either form of the Masamune; magic is OK. Uses broad swords and can learn Water, (just Water, not Ice) magic.
- Robo - Serial #R-66Y, aka Promethius from 2300 A.D. His job was to study humans as a species, but Lucca reprogrammed him not to harm them. He eventually learns feelings. Has a good fighting ability and great techs. He uses his arm for a weapon and uses Shadow based techs (no magic).
- Ayla - Leader of Ioka Village in 65,000,000 B.C. She fights the Reptites because they want control of the world. Eventually, she has to make Kino (boyfriend) the new chief. Has the best fighting ability and next to the best techs. She only has three weapons, all fists (you get them the last two at certain levels). She has Shadow based magic, no real magic.
- Magus - A wizard, orginally from 12,000 B.C. Thought to be evil, but his ways aren't so good. He changed Glenn into a frog. He seeks to find Schala, his missing older sister. Has a fair fighting ability and the best magic. He uses scythes and uses Shadow magic, (not based).
+ Great plot. Wonderful graphics and music. Dual and Triple Techs are a great idea. There are varieties of endings and subquests. New Game+ lets you access more endings.
- Battles can be redundant. Traveling constantly between time periods can get annoying. New Game+ is too easy.
