A Technical
History of Dark Mists
Styx, Thrym, Awrathre, and I began working on Dark Mists during
the summer of 1996. We all knew each other from our characters in
Carrion Fields, a mud we had enjoyed playing but which was going
through changes we did not exactly enjoy. We wanted to bring back
the fun of Carrion Fields and take it in new directions, with
more of an emphasis on roleplaying.
The basis of the world of Dark Mists is Rom 2.4 beta 3. Thrym
first got hold of a copy and then began to alter it to suit our
needs. When we got our site at nolta.mudservices.com port 2222, Thrym put all his work there and
continued to add to it, taking some ideas from other muds he had
visited (Carrion Fields being one) and implementing them his way.
(Despite rumors to the contrary, there was no stolen code from
Carrion Fields used in Dark Mists.) The mud went through
playtesting for a while and officially opened 21 October 1996
just after midnight. Ceran joined the imm team during the
playtesting period, as did Adorno and Aegnor.
Thrym
and Ceran did the programming. When Thrym took leave, Ceran
became main coder. He implemented most of the specialized spells
and skills for the classes, most of the spells and skills for the
Houses, and implemented the classes and races themselves that we
added to Rom. From ideas of the immortals and mortals both, Ceran
added race-specific skills and special skills/spells for the
classes we implemented here. Rungekutta joined the coding team,
enhancing and fixing many things for us, including the new evil
race of mind flayers, the Illithids. Our coding team is currently
working on other major projects. Recently added to the effects of
our world, hunger and thirst, starvation and dehydration. Xurinos
joined the coding team in August, 1997 and worked mostly on
fixing the bugs that plagued us from the opening day, as well as
the current major projects. Ceran left us in September. In late
December, Wervdon joined the team as a coder. At roughly the same
time, Xurinos coded some of the new stuff that my major area
project required, thus we have a floating city in the clouds.
Dielantha joined the Pantheon in December, 1997 to be designer of
the official web page.
January, 1998: Work has begun on a special project for Dark
Mists... About which... Heh, that would be telling.
