Nipsey In Springtime

An Essay By Kyle T. Sovereign

On any winter day, a person wearing a squirrel costume is not likely to happen by. It would be quite an unusual sight to see someone dressed as a couch on a warm spring afternoon. Coming across a person disguised as Nipsey Russell in the middle of the summer would be a queer find indeed. But when autumn finally rolls around, it brings with it Halloween. Halloween offers an array of different costumes. Some of the costumes are scary, some are silly, and some are failed attempts at being scary or silly.

Many people like to stick with the theme of Halloween and dress in a scary costume. There are several choices in the scary costume category. There are the traditional monsters--Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolfman. There are also newer symbols of horror from movies and television. Jason, Freddy and Snupholuphogus, for example. An ambitious person could even try to design his or her own costume. A suitable costume could probably be made with some old clothes and a few common household appliances. Scary is certainly a safe choice when choosing a type of costume.

Although scary costumes are more traditional, silly costumes also go over quite well with the Halloween crowds. The best silly costume is one that is completely unusual. For example, if someone showed up at a costume party disguised as a shoelace, he or she would be considered quite silly. A shoelace would be considered a silly costume because it is something that most people would never think to use as a costume. Another example of a silly costume is a bran muffin. Someone decked out in bran muffin garb would certainly be considered quite silly. While bran muffins are a staple at breakfast and a great source of fiber, they would not usually be considered an ideal idea for a costume. Coming up with a silly costume is much easier and much more fun than deciding on a scary costume. Opinions on what is scary are very limited because most people are basically afraid of the same things. But opinions on what is silly vary widely.

As easy as it may be for some people to come up with a scary or silly costume that goes over well with all who see it, others fail miserably. A person designing his or her own scary costume may have a completely different opinion from others as to what is scary. A man might just put on a headband with razor sharp razors jutting out from all angles and think he is going to scare every person he crosses paths with. A scary costume is not designed quite that easily. Another man might think he is extra scary because wearing shoes that are two sizes too big. This, obviously, is not a scary costume. A person can also fail in an attempt to come up with a silly costume. For example, a woman might start giggling at her costume of two feathers sticking out of her hair and a toothpick glued to her face. This costume certainly is unusual but most people would not consider it silly; most people would probably fear anyone that would wear such a costume.

Whether someone decides to wear a silly costume or a scary one, it would not be unusual to be wearing a costume on Halloween. This is the only time of year that someone can get away with wearing a costume. Therefore, Halloween is the only time of year that people who like to wear costumes can be happy.
