Background

Father: David Heit
Mother: Fran Heit
Sister: Dawn Heit

I was born and raised in New York City. I lived in Brooklyn for 7 years, and then Staten Island for 7 years. I attended Hunter College High School in Manhattan for 7th, 8th, and 9th grades - then my folks bought a townhouse in Bordentown, NJ (slightly smaller than Manhattan).

I graduated from Bordentown Regional High School in 1989. In those days, BRHS was not very academically challenging. There weren't even any AP classes. I went back for a visit in October 1998. Although there are now some AP classes, there are no longer any computer programming classes. Also, graduation requirements have been gutted. It used to be that you were required to take a certain number of English, Math, and History classes. Now, as long as you take a certain number of total classes and pass a standardized test, it doesn't matter what classes you take. Anyway, the classes that I took weren't particularly informative, but they helped me to get nice grades, which in turn helped me to get into MIT (Montana Institute of Trucking), where I majored in Electrical Engineering. (If you care, I had a concentration in technical writing).

After 4.5 years at The 'Tute (Class of '93.5), I escaped to Folsom, California (home of the famous Folsom State Prison). I've lived here since December 1993, working for a small but profitable semiconductor firm called Intel.

Because of Intel's Information Security Policies, a firewall prevents anybody outside of Intel from seeing my permanent home page. My publically-accessible home page may change URLs from time to time.

Things I Like To Do

Hanging out with friends is always neat. Is it a coincidence that all of my local friends are Intel employees?

Sports are invigorating. From April to November I usually play on a Men's D-League softball team - The Slackers. I tried managing a co-ed team, but some of the women seemed to always show up late, and we had to forfeit.

Basketball and tennis are also lots of fun. I'm not very good, but I love the exercise and competition. Sometimes it's just hard to find a game.

Anyone who has known me for any amount of time realizes that I probably watch too much TV. Sports and news are probably at the top of my viewing list, but I also like The Simpsons, That 70's Show, King of the Hill The PJs, Friends, and Star Trek Voyager.

As previously mentioned, I'm a big pro sports fan (don't give a hoot about the college scene). My favorite teams are the New York Yankees, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Sacramento Kings, and the N.Y. Rangers. Hockey does not get much attention in Sacramento, unfortunately.

Volunteer Work

Since I've left college, I've found that I've had more free time with which to help others. I participate in National Engineers Week every year, going to a local school to extol the wonders of engineering to kids at all grade levels.

I also tutor algebra at Folsom High School. Although the students don't always understand everything, every time you get them to understand something, it's a great feeling.

Every year, I participate in The Business of Reading. I go to Blanche Sprentz Elementary School in Folsom and read passages of books with a small group (4-5) of children. Although we don't get a lot of reading in (the kids can get rowdy), we share some cookies and have a good time. The letters I get from the kids afterwards makes the whole experience worthwhile.

In July 1995, I started volunteering as a Big Brother. My little brother, Anthony (age 12) lived in Roseville, CA with his mom and older brother. We had fun for a while, but he really wasn't interested in the program (his mom signed him up), and in March 1996 we went our separate ways. I might have tried to match up with a different Little Brother, but the all-volunteer staff at Big Brothers was not very coordinated.
