It was a golden age in the Barren Realms. Every race was at peace with each other. This was just before the creation of the Illithid race. Druids and Elves peacefully coexisted and founded the city of Malacandra. Humans moved on from their original hometown to found a city which they called Midgaard. It was at this time that a curious elf known as Gilderas learned of the existence of other worlds besides the Realms which were all that he knew. Knowing he could never leave the realms by his own power, he sought out to find a way to explore another world which was told of in the scrolls of Dragonlance which were housed in the elven city of Malathar's library. Being a quite clever elf, he soon developed a plan to get to this other realm. He joined a pilgrimage to the original shrine to Mota with a band of druids, disguised as a druidic priest by wearing a wormsilk robe, tucking his ears behind his hair and using long wooden stilts. Upon reaching the city, he separated from the group and began to destroy a part of the shrine with powerful balls of flame. Angered at this outrage, Mota sent a powerful beam of blinding divine power to the land, which surged towards the elf at blinding speed. Expecting this, he grabbed the key instrument of his plan, a staff of power, which absorbed the power and allowed him to redirect it. He cast a spell of teleportation, which brought him to the destination which he sought. In this new world, he was unfamiliar with the terrain and was unprepared. It was then that a fierce animal trampled him unconcious. When he awoke, he saw the face of a strange being he had never seen before. A short, nimble human-type creature. This was the first recorded encounter of anyone from the Realms with a member of the Kender race. It was at this time that Mota realized what had happened. Angered, she travelled to this new world and began to search for Gilderas herself. At the same time, where Gilderas was recovering, he fell in love with the beautiful kender who tended to his wounds, and she fell in love with him. Months, years passed, and fully recovered, Gilderas stayed with his beloved. Finally, Mota found Gilderas, and struck him down in anger. The kender, who he had taken as his wife cried and sobbed sadly. Seeing the pain she had caused, Mota felt remorse for the young couple and offered the kender a single favor from her, though on this plane, her power was weakened as this was not her world. The kender female, knowing should her world find out about the visitor she had loved, she would be an outcast. She asked that her and Gilderas' children be brought back to Gilderas' world, where they would be safe. And Mota agreed to this, and the children were taken to the Barren Realms, where they prospered. Although not pure Kender in blood, they still posessed the traits and skills of a pure kender. They were extremely curious and swift, and had the ability to steal and sneak and hide. They prospered, and so the kender race became abundant in the Realms.
Kender are a nefarious race. They seem to excel in the arts of pocket-picking and thievery. Kender do not mean harm by this. They just are overly-curious types who need to have everything they see. Especially if it is not theirs.
