Michel Foucault, edited by Jeremy R. Carrette. Routledge, $20 paper (210p)
ISBN 0-415-92362-X
The late French philosopher Foucault devoted his career to uncovering the ways
in which language and such social institutions as the clinic and the prison
are tools wielded by those in power to keep the less powerful in their places.
In the fourth volume of his history of sexuality-unfinished at his death and
still unpublished-Foucault was beginning to demonstrate how early Christianity
regulated sexuality, providing the West with its legacy of sexual repression.
Although Foucault's published works contain very limited discussion of
religion, his unpublished conversations, lectures and essays point to an
engagement with the subject. In this collection of mostly unpublished
interviews and essays, Carrette (Foucault and Religion) gathers the writings
in which Foucault is most concerned with the relation of religion and culture.
Carrette's introductory essay is informative and engaging, and the book offers
illuminating insights into Foucault's penetrating cultural philosophy. (July)
