The Educational Poverty Alleviation Project initiated by Tsinghua University in 2002 is a public cause aimed at benefiting the poverty-stricken areas in China. Its goal is to provide people in underdeveloped areas with the opportunity to utilize high-quality educational resources through the support of modern technology. The program's ultimate goal is to eliminate poverty by spreading knowledge. We have selected 100 state-targeted counties (i. e. those with a standard of living below the national poverty line), mainly in Western China, to assist them in establishing distance learning centers free of charge. We then provide critical educational resources to officials, primary- and middle-school teachers, students, and farmers via free satellite broadcasting.
2006 Summer Program
This summer,
with the support of the Wang Foundation, we have created the Service and Learning
Program in rural China. There will
be 394 students from Tsinghua University and 67 students from 12 different American
Universities, accompanied by more than 70 faculty members from Tsinghua and American
universities, dispatched to 52 rural counties. The program aims to enhance the
communication between the youths, to learn about the real rural China, and to
learn about Chinese history and culture.
