HOOVER PROGRAMS
Please note that this is not a complete list of every program offered at
Hoover. This list is only indicative of the most prominent programs that
developed out of our research. Other programs include CAL SOAPS, Talent
Search, and various A.P. classes.
Synergy
Synergy is an after-school program that includes recreation and academic
tutoring. It is administered by Hoover and financed through San Diego
State University and the City Heights Collaborative. Concerning college
prep, it offers courses were students learn about college level academics
and life, academic tutoring, and classes that assist them in filling out
scholarships and tracking down information.
G.A.T.E: Gifted and Talented Program
The GATE program is a national program designed to track students, at an
early age, who have exceptional academic or artistic skills. G.A.T.E.
eligibility is determined as early as the 3rd grade through a
test called the “Raven Matrix Test.” In the 9th and 10th
grades they are placed in accelerated classes and in 11th and
12th grade they are placed in AP classes.
A.V.I.D: Advanced Via Individual Determination
AVID is designed to prepare students for entrance into a four-year college
or university. It is based on the premise that the so-called “average”
kids, such as non G.A.T.E. students have the potential to succeed in
college. It is offered during the fourth period and consists of various
activities and counseling, such as tutoring, college trips, and keeping a
notebook for all of their classes.
Upward Bound:
Upward Bound is a program designed to increase student awareness of
college opportunities and college culture. It consists of summer programs
were high school students live on a college campus during the summer to
engage in various academic and cultural activities
Gear-Up:
Gear-Up is the principle program that helps 9th and 10th
graders prepare for college. It is integrated with Synergy, which offers a
“Gear-Up for College” class about college culture and life. The
Gear-Up grant provides a limited scholarship for all 10th
graders. All students who are currently in the 10th grade are
guaranteed admission to SDSU if they maintain a 2.0 GPA.
