How To Decode UTF-8 Russian Mail

If you have a problem to decode the mail written in the format UTF-8 in Russian use my Java utility utf_rus2lat to decode it. This Java utility may be used on any platform ( Win95, Unix or whatever ) with JVM ( Java Virtual Machine ). Basically you need to do the next steps:

Save the letter by the Netscape 3 Gold to the any file, for example gold-letter.txt. Unfortunately, I was convinced that Netscape Communicator 4.04 saves it in the format that isn't suitable for the next steps. Some invisible symbols are appearing there. But you may to try it or any other mail client.
Use Java utility native2ascii included in every standard set of JDK (Java Development Kit). Type the command

native2ascii -encoding UTF8 gold-letter.txt my-unicode.txt

This utility converts the file containing the Unicode characters to the ascii text which consists of 6 characters per every symbol. For example, the cyrillic character A is the ascii sequence \u0410. Non-unicode characters aren't converting.
Download the small zip file containing the utility utf_rus2lat, the source letter gold-letter.txt, its unicode case my_unicode.txt and the target letter normal.txt. Unzip it and run the utility utf_rus2lat.

java utf_rus2lat my_unicode.txt

to get the letter on the display. You can also redirect it to the file.

java utf_rus2lat my_unicode.txt > normal.txt

You will get the russian letter in the usual latin font. See the matching table "cyrillic font" to "latin".
