Return to John (Peter) HALIBURTON
John grew up in St. John's where he attended Bishop Field College. He was very fond of sports, and especially enjoyed soccer and skiing. (His prized soccer trophy was lost in a store fire where it had been placed to have the base repaired.) He and a partner setup a ski jump business on the south side of St. John's. Later, in Lewisporte, he would make significant contributions to minor and junior hockey. He worked for a short time for his father at Lewisporte Wholesalers, but eventually went into business for himself. After spending many successful years as a manufacturers agent, he found himself without anyone to represent in 19__. After a rough __ year(s?) he obtained the position of Inspector for the Liquor Licensing Board. Like his father, he enjoyed boating. Much of the summers were spent at the old Wells family home on Exploits Island. However, in later years vacation time tended to be spent in the warmer temperatures of Florida. It was there he and Margaret intended to spend six months of each year. But, he died of complications to a minor ailment three months before retirement. Aside from being the president of the Lewisporte Minor Hockey Association for ten years, John was involved in many other areas. He was President of the central chapter of the PC Association from ______ to ______, and from ______ to ______ he was president of the Lewisporte Chamber of Commerce. He remained quite active in it both for many years besides. He ran for town council twice, but was never successful. He was campaign manager for Jim Russell when he was elected to the House of Assemblies in 197_. While not much of a church-goer, John was head of the St. Paul's Anglican Church building fund committee and a close friend of Rev. Richard Walters. A stained glass window was donated and may be seen in the front of the new church on Premier Drive.

While staying with his Uncle Al in Halifax, Jack completed a two year business course in one year. He then returned home, at about age 16, to bear the responsibility for looking after both the business and the family. When there was nothing left of either he walked away, leaving everything behind, never to see Woody Point again. He moved to St. John's where he spent some time working for other businesses such as Monroe's and A.H. Murray before deciding to start his own business on Bell Street as an importer and manufacturer's agent. This lead to the family relocating to Lewisporte. Here he was the founding General Manager of a wholesale company which is still in operation. In fact, Lewisporte Wholesalers, now known as Atlantic Wholesalers, is still one of the area's largest employers. His death came quite suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack.
