Step #1
Duplicate that image to a new window (Image>Duplictae). Select all the image (Select>All) and press "Delete".
Now you should have a white inage exactly the same size of the text image. This is Important because we need to do
some calculation between the two images, and calculation can only be made between two image with identical size.
We now need to create the bullets holes. Pontilize the image (Filter>Pixelate>Pointilize). Use a cell size appropriate for your text. I used a size of 5. Now you should have something that looks like that:
Step #2
This image is to gray to use as bullets holes. We need to adjust it. Adjust the levels automaticlly
(Image>Adjust>AutoLevels). Now you should have a picture that looks like this:
Step #3
Now, we need to make the holes a little smaller and more rough. To do that, use the Threshold (Image>Map>Threshold)
and adjust the picture to look like you want it. I used a level of 130 to achieve this image:
Step #4
This is too rough. This image should be blured just a little bit, so blur it (Filter>Blur>Blur). This is what you should get:
Step #5
Now we need to punch this holes in the text. We use it through a screen calculation. Go to the Image>Calculation.
Set the mode to be Screen. The first source should be the "holes" image, but we need white holes and not black
as it is now, so check the Invert box in the first source. The second source should be the text image. Make sure that
the result is: "New". Click on OK. Now you should have a new image that look like that:
Step #6
You can stop here, but you can also add one little thing that would make the text look a little bit more like it came back
from the war.
Duplicate the image in step #6. Use the Mezzotint filter (Filter>Pixelate>Mezzotint) and choose one of the lines or strokes methods, what ever you think look the best. I used the Short lines method to get this result:
Step #7
We want only the text to be with whoite lines and the background to be white. To do this we need to use the screen
calculation again (Image>Calculations). Choose the Screen mode. The first sources should be the text with the holes
(the picture from step #6) and the second source should be the text with the lines (th image from step #7). Again,
Make sure you are setting the result to "New". The picture that you got is the final result of the process:
Step #8 - Final result
You can now use this image and fill it with color or pattern (don't forget to convert to RGB), Use it as a mask or just
putting it somewhere in your work. Just use your imagination.
