Gratiot Falls Area

This was an interesting set of waterfalls. Getting down to the water level of the lower falls was a bit precarious but it was well worth the effort. Unfortunately some of the shots I took here did not turn out well enough to be shown here. (Darn 110 instamatic. Next time I bring my new 35mm camera)

Photo of the lower "falls". This part is really more of a rapids than a falls. The upper falls are much more impressive, but I couldn't get into a decent position to take a shot at them with my rinky-dink camera.

This is looking downstream from the lower falls toward a bend in the river. When I first saw this cliff, the depression at the bottom looked like a cave, but in reality it's only a couple feet deep. The rock face itself is really interesting to me. it appears to be a soft sandstone with lots of harder, rounded rocks embedded in it. The rocks are like the kind you might see on a beach, which REALLY makes me wonder what the geologic history of this spot was like.

I found this freaky mushroom on the pathway down to the falls. The colors on the photo really don't do it justice, the reds and yellows were much more pronounced in real life. But the sunlight shining in on it still shows up really well.

Update

I tried taking my wife to the falls in Aug 2003, unfortunately I made a wrong turn and we ended up walking to the mouth of the river. But as they say, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. I think I got a couple of nice shots from this area.
One of my more "artistic" shots. Kath liked this one so much she had it blown up and framed for her office.
A shot of the mouth of the river. I wish I knew why all the creeks I've been to up here seem to take a sharp turn right before entering the lake. Maybe something to do with waves piling up sand?
