Bete Grise/Lac La Belle Area

I've gone through this area many times in my Keweenaw travels. It's a quiet little town that used to have a copper stamp mill back in the old days. Recently though I've found out that it's not so quiet politically. I'll tell you about it later on this page.

Haven Falls is the centerpiece of a little roadside park in Lac La Belle. History buffs might want to check out what's left of a copper mining era stamping plant located in the woods to the right if you are facing the falls. (Not much left besides the concrete foundation and some debris)
Same Haven Falls, different perspective and different season. I climbed up the side of the falls to get this one in the fall of 1997.

A view across the bay.
This shot was taken somewhere south of Lac La Belle looking out across Bete Grise Bay toward a rather impressive hill. I want to say that it is Brockway Mountain, but I don't think this one is far enough west to be Brockway. A recent visitor to this page believes it is Mt. Houghton, I'll look into confirming that in the future.

The Mendota Lighthouse guards the canal that leads from Lake Superior into Lac La Belle (the lake, not the town) The current owner purchased it a few years ago and is in the process of restoring the buildings on the property. He's also in a battle to preserve the surrounding area from modern development that's gotten a lot of press in the area. Find out more by visiting the Mendota Lighthouse website.
