Fremantle started this game pretty well, which came as a bit of a shock to the TV commentary boys. Freo managed 3 goals in the first quarter, all of which were more or less set up by Peter Bell. Bell had missed the last couple of games with a calf strain, and so this was a very clear indication of how much Fremantle had been missing him.

Fremantle came into the last quarter one point ahead, but that didn't last long at all. Sydney managed to open up the forward line and win the ball out of the centre, and kicked 4 goals in a hurry. In the general scheme of modern footy, that may not be a big deal, but this left Freo more than 4 goals down having only kicked 8 goals in three-quarters of a game of footy.

Final Score : Fremantle 9.4-58 lost to Sydney 12.19-91
